I am currently watching the TV show and once I learned that it's based on a book series, I needed to read them. So I was really excited when I got the 1st and 2nd book.
The 1st book is about people who are not living on Earth anymore, because there was a devastating nuclear war, so humanity has lived on spaceships far above Earth's radioactive surface. The council decide to send one hundred juvenile delinquents on a dangerous mission - to re-colonize the planet and all of their crimes will be cleared. It could be their second chance at life, or it could be a suicide mission and all die slowly by radiation. Clarke was arrested for treason, Wells, the chancellor's son, came to Earth for the girl he loves, Bellamy did reckless things to protect his sister, Glass managed to escape back onto the ship from confinement.
Well, If I were able to choose to go back in time and change that I read the book after the TV show, I would do that. Firstly, because it was hard to let my imagination flow, hard to imagine the characters that are in the book, but are not in the TV show.
From one side I really liked the writing style. There are 4 main characters and the chapters are from all of their views (Clarke, Wells, Bellamy and Glass). From the other side I was willing to skip the chapters to read only one certain character. *frustrating* But I was strong and read the book from the beginning till the end. I read it pretty fast, because it was interesting and I wanted to keep on.
The characters are one of the most interesting part of the book. It is pleasing to see both genders (Clarke and Glass - girls, Wells and Bellamy - boys). From the beginning I started to think what their crimes were, what did they do to get confined. As the facts uncovered, new mysteries appeared. Also one of the characters, Glass, was still on the ship, but I wanted to know more what was happening there. It would have been nice to read from a grown up view, for example, one of the council members.
The story was good. As I have seen the TV show, I wanted more "danger" in the book. I wanted to see the brutal killings and the reapers, I definitely want to see them in the books. All of that probably will be in the second book.
All together, the book was good, I liked it and definitely enjoyed it, because the story is compelling. I could not put it down and wanted to see what happens next. I rate it:
8/10
